On their debut album, High Lonesome explores the boundaries of what bluegrass music can be in today’s world. While sticking to traditional elements such as instrumentation, tight vocal harmonies, and song structure, High Lonesome is able to deliver a new spin on bluegrass and acoustic music. This album lyrically explores themes of sadness and frustration with tracks like “Savage Sundown” and “Worn Out Shoes” and chances for new growth, healing, and self-reliance as showcased in “We Hit the Road” and “Trust My Hands”. There is no shortage of instrumental beauty on this record not only in the album’s instrumental track “Jubilee” but in the solos, composed lines, and drive each member brings to their sound.
While original material is at the forefront of this record, the band selected a few covers to add including a previously unreleased Louisa Branscomb song “Old Familiar Song” which fits right in with the other tracks. The songs on this album are packed with unique arrangements, explosive instrumental work, and catchy but sincere songwriting that showcases the seriousness of these musicians and their work.
